Brillion Iron Works
Brillion Iron Works was a design/build project adding a new 25,000 SF building with an attached 90 foot tall equipment penthouse. Interior work included foundations for a disamatic molding machine, pits and foundations for shaker conveyors and a large pit for a pressure pour furnace. KBS' base contract of $2.6 million was with the equipment supplier, Sandmold Systems. We also performed internal modifications directly for Brillion Iron Works. This project was completed in September of 2003.
Address:
200 Park Avenue
Brillion, WI
Challenges:
1. The new building was on a fill site, which required extensive undercutting and engineered fill replacement for both the building foundations and the equipment foundations.
2. Concrete tolerances were very tight for all of the equipment foundations. The equipment foundations (620 l.f.) had continuous I-beam weldments which had to be hung in the pours.
3. The overall new addition was 260' long and the machine foundations extended into the existing building another 360'. The work in the existing building had to be done around production and ongoing demolition activities.
4. Existing furnace pits had to be redesigned for the larger ladles and forklifts used in the new process.
5. Because the owner was purchasing equipment as the building was being built, constant coordination and engineering modifications were necessary to maintain the fast track completion date. |
