Address:
5202 Monument Lane
Madison, WI
Challenges:
One of the design objectives for the new training center for the Northern Wisconsin Regional Carpenters Council was to incorporate the many different materials that the carpentry trade typically works with. In addition, the building site chosen was in a relatively wooded area. The result was a building design that included numerous building materials which all needed to be aesthetically transitioned together. The materials included cast-in-place concrete foundations and slabs, precast concrete wall panels and mezzanines, wood stud walls, metal stud walls, wood siding, metal siding, exposed glue-laminated beams and decking, steel bar joist roof framing, metal standing seam roofing, EPDM roofing, drywall partitions, exposed ceilings, acoustical ceilings, wood doors and frames, hollow metal doors and frames, aluminum doors and windows, exposed ductwork, wood base and casing, rough sawn log column wraps, exposed stained concrete floors, carpeting, ceramic tile, and vinyl tile along with a host of miscellaneous specialty materials. Another goal in the project was to recycle as much of the construction debris as possible. We even had the trees that were removed for construction sawn, kiln dried, and milled into the wood base and casing used inside the building. As usual the construction budget was very tight and numerous value engineering ideas where investigated and incorporated into the project without reducing the quality or aesthetics of the building. The result is a beautiful building that transitions into the wooded surroundings while providing all the functionality required of a regional training center for the carpenters of south central Wisconsin. |
