Marquette University Cramer Hall - Phase I - VI
KBS was selected to renovate the old dental school on the Marquette campus. The project will be complete over multiple phases. Phased construction has allowed for full use and occupancy of the building during construction. HGA is the architect. Phase I constructed a new area for the Speech Pathology and Audiology department, and was completed in July of 2005. Phase II renovated the Psychology department, and was completed in February of 2006. Phase III renovated the 7,000 SF Exercise Science and Athletic Training area and was completed in August of 2006. Phase IV was a renovation of the 10,000 SF University Advancement area and was completed in August of 2006. Phase V was the Courtyard Infill and was complete in November of 2006. Phase VI is slated to start in December of 2006 and will be an 8,000 SF remodel of the Psychology Department. Phase VI is estimated to be completed in March of 2007.

Challenges:
The Marquette Cramer Hall project presented many unique challenges in dealing with updating an historic dental school building into a first rate, multi-departmental facility, while preserving the fundamental architectural characteristics. The goal of the first and second phases was to create a facility that would bring the Speech and Psychology departments to the forefront of their expertise. The work was completed with 75% building occupation. The daily operations of construction, as well as a number of contractors and equipment, were coordinated on strict schedule to ensure the safety of the student body and community.
The detail of the construction included many modernized features. The elevator relocation was a difficult transition that created an open stairway which has become the focal point of the building. The mechanical and electrical systems coordinated to accommodate the existing structure as well as plan for the future use of the building. The penthouse addition allowed the mechanical systems to be refurbished, however created many constructability issues that involved reworking chases and additional structural retrofitting with restricted access for installation. The roofing work involved a number of different roofs at varying elevations, and required various crane mobilizations monitored closely by KBS and the University. The most distinguished features of the roof work were the saw-tooth monitors. One half of the three monitors were restored to a skylight that transmits light into the 2nd phase Psychology Department's lecture room and corridor. Throughout the demolition and construction work, KBS was dedicated to ensuring that Marquette's operations remained top priority and were given exceptional consideration. The cooperation between Marquette and KBS' construction team made the completion of phases I & II a success. |
